Paris, August 10, 2024 – Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet secured her second gold medal of the Paris 2024 Olympics, winning the women’s 10,000m with a time of 30:43.25. Chebet’s victory at the Stade de France was a testament to her exceptional endurance and determination, finishing ahead of Italy’s Nadia Battocletti, who took silver, and Dutch star Sifan Hassan, who earned bronze.
“I’m so happy, to do the 5,000m and 10,000m is not something easy,” Chebet said after the race. “But just focus, and know that you can achieve, just believe in yourself. I believed that I could do it. I just wanted to win the 10,000m for my country. My country has never won a gold medal (in the women’s 10,000m). So I said I wanted to be the first woman to win a gold medal in the 10,000m.”
The 10,000m race built up to an exhilarating climax, with the Stade de France crowd creating a deafening atmosphere. Hassan, who is pursuing an ambitious Olympic treble, surged for the finish with 200m to go but could not match the pace and resolve of Chebet. Chebet’s gold medal in the 10,000m adds to the 5,000m title she claimed earlier in the Games on August 5.
“I really hope to go,” Hassan said of her upcoming marathon attempt scheduled for Sunday. “I’ve done in my life the 800m, the 1500m, 10,000m, everything. But endurance on Sunday, that’s not a joke. To finish the marathon is a kind of hell. It’s not easy. The real one will start Sunday.”
Italy’s Nadia Battocletti delivered a standout performance, with her silver medal capping an excellent year that included European gold in both the 5,000m and 10,000m.
On a night filled with athletic brilliance, it was Chebet who shone the brightest, making history with her historic 10,000m victory.
